Chapter 6

Blaze unlocked the cabin door and held it so Evie could enter.

He locked the door behind himself and turned around to find Evie sitting on the edge of the bed, her hair rumpled.

“Here, let me help you,” he said quietly. He reached under the pillow and pulled down the covers. “Lift up so I can pull these out from under you.”

Evie reached out and grasped his biceps, leaning forward as he tugged on the comforter. She leaned too far and lost her balance, her face planting into his chest. He caught her and she cackled.

“Sorry!” she whispered, but her voice was loud.

Blaze smothered a smile as he guided her down to the mattress. She kept hold of his arms, feeling his muscles move and bulge as he pulled the sheets and blankets up over her. He tried to back away to get himself ready for bed, but she held on tight.

“Blaze,” she whispered, her eyes big and soft.

“What is it?” he asked, searching her face with concern.

“Kiss me,” she whispered, closing her eyes, and tilting her face up.

“You’re drunk, angel. It wouldn’t be right,” he said, not willing to take advantage of her in her vulnerable state.

“Just once? Please?” she begged, her brows pulled together, her bottom lip poking out slightly.

Blaze gave a resigned sigh. He could deny this woman nothing. “Okay. Then you’re going to sleep.”

She nodded, closing her eyes, and tipping her face up toward his.

Blaze bent down and brushed a soft kiss across her lips.

“Mmm,” Evie purred, sliding her hands up to the back of his head.

“Evie,” he whispered against her lips.

“Shhh,” she shushed him sternly and pulled him closer. Her tongue dashed out, swiping across his bottom lip. He groaned, kissing her more deeply. She wound her fingers in his hair and tugged. Their tongues slid over one another as they kissed again and again until they were both panting.

“Evie, we have to stop,” Blaze breathed, pressing another kiss to her mouth. His resolve was crumbling. Her kissing him passionately, demandingly, hungrily, was reducing him to a pile of want and need, his masculine instincts taking over with the desire to claim her.

“No,” she whined, letting go of his hair and pulling at his shoulders. He held firm.

“Our time will come, angel, but not tonight.” He pulled away and brushed her hair back from her face. She blinked at him a few times. He dropped a light kiss on her forehead before backing up and turning away, hoping Evie couldn’t see his prominent arousal.

Blaze pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it on a chair, kicked off his boots, and started to unbuckle his belt.

“Is it because of the baby?” Evie asked, her voice strange and squeaky.

His blood ran cold. He slowly turned back toward her and saw there were tears in her eyes.

“What?” he asked, moving to sit beside her on the bed.

“You don’t want me because of the baby,” she said, her face pouty. It would have been adorable if not for the tears sliding down her cheeks.
